Stationary Operating Engineers
QUALIFICATIONS

At least 18 years of age with copies of legal state-issued birth certificate and photo I.D. upon application.

High School Diploma or G.E.D. at time of application.

Military discharge papers or DD-214 if necessary.

Must be physically fit for the work of the trade.

All applicants must comply with City, County, State or Federal requirements.

Must pass a written test on reading, math, and mechanical comprehension.

Must complete an interview with the J.A.T.C. board.

Must be fluent in English.

Must be able to pass random drug tests.
What is a Stationary Operating Engineer
Operates and maintains steam boilers, hi-temp hot water boilers, generators, compressors, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and all related electrical equipment. Controls, inspects and maintains all mechanical equipment to the end; that the most economical results may be obtained.
Stationary Engineers are employed in such industries as: Bakeries, Breweries, Buildings, Dairies, Hotels, Casinos, Laundries, Ice and cold Storage, Meat Packing and Processing Plants, Hospitals, Schools and etc.

About the Union
I.U.O.E. Local 501, AFL-CIO was formed in 1953 by the merger of several regional locals. Since its humble beginnings Local 501 has grown to one of the largest Stationary Engineer Locals in the entire United States. Over the decades our Local has established itself as a pillar of highly trained, multi-skilled trade unionists throughout the Labor community. Our members perform maintenance and repair of all HVAC equipment, boiler operation, lighting, plumbing, welding, painting, carpentry, or in general, all trade related maintenance and repair. We take pride in not only representing a diverse group of individuals, but also helping that group continue to advance their skills through training and acquiring the knowledge necessary to advance through their careers.

Our Local represents Operating Engineers from all over Southern California and Southern Nevada: from State of California employees to major hospitals, hotels, high-rises, casinos. dairies, production facilities, performance halls and arenas to name a few. By becoming a member of Local 501, an engineer begins the first steps in gaining security, skills, and opportunities for him/herself and their family.
